Dinner Party
Fine china
A glass of cheap red wine
The trimmings and fixings
A plate of sweet peas and swine
Open the windows for wind
Open the doors if he comes this time
Open up the floodgates for the drunk endeavors
Maybe it will open up your mind
Set up in white lace and porcelain
Prepared for the honorary feast
On bare hands and knees
I’ve been cooking for so long,
The neighbors ought to have called in a priest
In the center lies the Holy Book
Say a prayer for all the time it took
I’ve been waiting on his call for so long
I took the phone off the damn hook
Yet this table is set and prepped for two
An indulgence for mouth and hungry eyes
I raise my glass for a toast as comrades do
But the only one here is me and not you
Candles of myrrh and incense are lit
I light a cigarette with the flames
And take one exhausted hit
The familiar wood chair I sink into
Where alone in obedience I sit.
